This is the ninth consecutive year that De Perifeer has been invited by Valkhof Festival to provide the program for two evenings in the Valkhof Chapel on the festival site; Tuesday evening, July 16 and Wednesday evening, July 17. Hanne De Backer is a Belgian baritone saxophonist who is based in Brussels. She is an energetic and versatile performer and focuses mainly on improvisation. Her palette is exceptionally broad – from quiet to crackling, from bright drones to whispered conversations between saxophone valves and everything in between – but always crushingly intimate, as if you were right in the middle of it all. She is the founder of gabbro, a fluid collective that wants to explore the impact of free improvisation in different locations and vice versa. In recent years she has regularly been in the spotlight and has worked with big names such as Signe Emmeluth, Paal Nilssen-Love, Raf Vertessen, Hamid Drake, Marta Warelis, Terrie Ex and Farida Amadou (who is on De Perifeer's program the day before). .
